GOP Governors Send Dozens of Migrants to Misleading Destinations in Political Stunt

Merely one day before the start of Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S., Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis loaded over four dozen Venezuelan and Colombian migrants onto two flights that were said to be headed for Boston, Massachusetts.

However, the planes touched down Wednesday on Martha’s Vineyard instead, leaving individuals and families with children as young as three years old confused about how and why they had arrived in a small island town rather than the state’s bustling capital.

Following suit, Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott sent two buses of migrants up to Washington, D.C. the next day, depositing passengers – many of whom had trash bags in tow full of personal belongings – on the street outside of Vice President Kamala Harris’s residence instead of at the designated drop-off point near Union Station, where volunteers were waiting to receive the group, according to NPR.

Domingo Garcia, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, said the migrants were “dumped like human garbage.”

“Republicans are playing politics with human beings, using them as props,” Biden said, addressing attendees at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala on Thursday evening. “What they’re doing is simply wrong. It’s un-American, it’s reckless and we have a process in place to manage migrants at the border. We’re working to make sure it’s safe and orderly and humane. Republican officials should not interfere with that process by waging these political stunts.”

Both governors proudly claimed responsibility for orchestrating the transfers – each a conspicuous attempt to add fuel to the immigration fire leading up to November’s midterm elections. In a Tweet on Thursday, Abbott said he was “sending migrants” to the Vice President’s “backyard to call on the Biden Administration to do its job & secure the border.”

Abbott has been consistently busing migrants out of Texas for months now, routing them to what he calls “sanctuary cities” led by Democrats such as Chicago, New York, and D.C., where mayor Muriel Bowser has faced such a large influx of arrivals that she has requested federal assistance and a coalition of NGOs funded by a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant in order to manage them.

Biden implored Republican lawmakers to reevaluate their approach to immigration, stating that an earnest effort “to come to the table and provide a pathway for citizenship for Dreamers” is “long overdue.”
