California Ski Resorts Extend Their Seasons Into Summer

California Ski Resorts Extend Their Seasons Into Summer

An onslaught of atmospheric river weather events have brought so much snow to California ski resorts this winter that many now plan to keep their slopes open well into the summer months.

Mammoth Mountain, a popular ski destination in the Eastern Sierra near Yosemite National Park, says it will continue to operate until the end of July, according to CNN.

“We aim to keep lifts spinning until as long as conditions allow, which definitely could go into August this season,” communications director Lauren Burke wrote. “Spring skiing and riding conditions are going to be the best we’ve ever seen with the mountain in mid-winter form.”

At the moment, Mammoth Mountain is less than half a foot away from breaking the 668-inch season snowfall record it set 13 years ago.

Southern California’s Big Bear Mountain plans to extend its season as well. The area, which sits about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, and includes both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit resorts, received 210 inches of snow this winter — more than it has seen in the last two decades. As a result, Big Bear’s chair lifts will continue to run at least three weeks longer than usual.

Among other slopes to have announced extended seasons are Vail-owned Northstar California, Heavenly Mountain, and Kirkwood Mountain.

“We are incredibly excited to offer even more days of skiing and riding for our guests,” Tom Fortune, vice president and COO of Heavenly and the Tahoe Region, said in a statement. “With all the snow we have received this year, and bluebird days around the corner, we are primed for awesome spring skiing – we look forward to sharing it all with our guests, teams, and communities as we close out a truly wild, but rewarding, season.”
