2024 Grammy Awards Highlights

Amidst an unprecedented deluge in Los Angeles, the 66th Grammy Awards t0ok place Sunday night, hosted by Trevor Noah. The event saw an array of artists recognized for their exceptional contributions to music, with Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell clinching the night’s coveted Best Song of the Year award for “What Was I Made For” from the Barbie movie soundtrack.

Victoria Monét secured the award for Best R&B Album with “Jaguar” and also nabbed the title of Best New Artist, as reported by the Associated Press, while SZA was honored with the Grammy for Best R&B Song for “Snooze.” Miley Cyrus’ chart-topping hit “Flowers” earned her two inaugural Grammys for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Record of the Year. And Taylor Swift became the first ever four-time Album of the Year winner with Midnights. Swift seized on the moment to tease the April 19 release of her upcoming album: The Tortured Poets Department.

A highlight of the evening was Jay-Z’s acceptance of the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, during which he voiced criticism over the Grammy’s historical oversight of Beyoncé for the Album of the Year category, despite her extensive collection of Grammy accolades, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Accompanied by his daughter, Blue Ivy, Jay-Z emphasized the paradox of Beyoncé’s situation, stirring reflection on the criteria for such prestigious recognitions.

“She has more Grammys than anyone, number one album of the year,” Jay-Z said. “So even by that metric it does not work. Think about that, most Grammys, never won album of the year, that does not work.”

The night also celebrated Killer Mike’s triple Grammy win, and Lil Durk alongside J. Cole for Best Melodic Rap Performance for “All My Life.” Comedian Dave Chappelle added a fifth Grammy to his collection for Best Comedy Album with “What’s In A Name?”

Michelle Obama was recognized with her second Grammy for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording for The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times. Joni Mitchell was honored with her 11th Grammy for Joni Mitchell At Newport [Live].

The Beatles made a historical win for Best Music Video for “I’m Only Sleeping,” marking their first Grammy in nearly three decades. The ceremony also spotlighted a unique string quartet ensemble of Palestinian, Israeli, and Arab musicians, introduced by Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., who eloquently noted, “As individuals, they sound really good, but together, they achieve something beautiful they could never do apart,” underscoring the unifying power of music.
