Airbnb Unveils New Experience Categories

Airbnb Unveils New Experience Categories

Airbnb is expanding beyond vacation rentals. The company just launched a major app overhaul that lets users book services like massages, personal training sessions, hair styling, private chefs, and even spa treatments—no overnight stays required.

According to The Verge, the redesigned app now features 10 new service categories. Think of it as your go-to concierge, minus the hotel. You can scroll, select, and book lifestyle perks directly through Airbnb, whether you’re on a trip or chilling at home.

“We now feel like we have such a strong foundation that we are capable of building and expanding,” Airbnb’s chief business officer Dave Stephenson said in an interview with CNBC.

Airbnb says these pros are thoroughly vetted, which sets them apart from listings on other gig-service apps.

“They are vetted for quality through an evaluation of expertise and reputation,” the company wrote in a statement. “They have an average of 10 years of experience, have completed Airbnb’s identity verification process, and are required to submit relevant licenses and certifications.”

Prices start under $50, according to Bloomberg, making some of these luxuries a bit more accessible. And since you don’t need to book a stay to access them, Airbnb is clearly aiming to reach users year-round—not just during vacation season.

The new services will roll out in 260 cities globally. That includes expanded “Experiences,” Airbnb’s curated outings like a behind-the-scenes tour of Notre Dame in Paris led by a restoration architect. These exclusive activities are part of Airbnb Originals, designed in-house to compete with traditional tourism options.

“Until now, our app has really done one thing, which is it lets you book a home,” Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said on this month’s earnings call. “We rebuilt the app from the ground up on a new technology stack. And now we can innovate faster and offer much more than homes.”

To make sure everything checks out, Airbnb also brought in legal pros to help confirm vendor certifications, which vary city to city. Anyone interested in offering services or experiences can apply directly through the platform.
