Kyle Rittenhouse, 18, who fatally shot two people and injured a third during protests last August in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was acquitted of all charges today, according to CNN<\/span><\/a>. After approximately 26 hours of deliberation, the jury found that Rittenhouse had acted reasonably amid the unrest that followed the shooting of Black resident Jacob Blake by a white police officer, according to The New York Times<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Armed with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle, Rittenhouse shot and killed Anthony Huber, 26, a friend of Blake’s, and Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, who was unarmed. He also wounded local medic Gaige Grosskreutz, who testified in the trial that he had pulled out a gun because he was convinced Rittenhouse was an active shooter.<\/p>\n

Rittenhouse was exonerated of first-degree intentional homicide, attempted homicide, and reckless endangering, according to the Associated Press<\/span><\/a>. Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes spoke out against the verdict.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last few weeks, many dreaded the outcome we just witnessed,\u201d Barnes said. \u201cThe presumption of innocence until proven guilty is what we should expect from our judicial system, but that standard is not always applied equally. We have seen so many black and brown youth killed, only to be put on trial posthumously, while the innocence of Kyle Rittenhouse was virtually demanded by the judge.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The prosecution will not be allowed to appeal, according to legal experts. Huber\u2019s family issued a statement shortly after the verdict was announced, expressing disappointment that there was no justice for their son.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are heartbroken and angry that Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted in his criminal trial for the murder of our son Anthony Huber,\u201d Karen Bloom and John Huber said. It \u201csends the unacceptable message that armed civilians can show up in any town, incite violence, and then use the danger they have created to justify shooting people in the street.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
