Only 16 percent picked stocks or mutual funds, down sharply from 22 percent in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Financial planners are waving the caution flag.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cPeople are always chasing what\u2019s hot, and that\u2019s the stupidest thing you could do,\u201d Carolyn McClanahan, a CFP and founder of Jacksonville, Florida-based Life Planning Partners, said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Though both gold and real estate can gain value over time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/08\/real-estate-and-gold-vs-stocks-best-long-term-investment.html\">historical data<\/a> shows the stock market has consistently delivered higher returns in the long run. Over the past century, the S&amp;P 500 has yielded an average annual return of about 10 percent\u2014far outpacing most housing markets and gold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Part of the appeal, experts say, is emotional. Physical assets are, quite literally, tangible.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou buy a house, you can see it, feel it, touch it,\u201d said Lee Baker, president of Claris Financial Advisors in Atlanta. \u201cYour investment in stocks perhaps doesn\u2019t feel real.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">The recent surge in gold\u2019s popularity may also be driven by fear. Ongoing geopolitical tensions and inconsistent tariff policies have shaken investor confidence.
