Scientists at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empa.ch\/\">Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology<\/a> (Empa) have developed a biodegradable, plastic-like substance made from mushroom roots\u2014or more specifically, mycelium, the dense root network that supports fungi. They recently published their findings in the scientific journal <a href=\"https:\/\/advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/adma.202418464\">Advanced Materials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Using the split-gill mushroom (Schizophyllum commune), researchers extracted fibers from its mycelium and processed them into a liquid while preserving its living, biological properties, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/scientists-used-mushrooms-to-invent-a-plastic-thats-alive\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Vice<\/span><\/a>. They are calling the result \u201cliving fiber dispersions,\u201d or LFDs, an organic material that can take on various forms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Unlike other biomaterials that rely on processed fungal cells, LFDs use the mushroom\u2019s entire extracellular matrix. That\u2019s the part fungi use to maintain their structure and carry out essential functions.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe fungus uses this extracellular matrix to give itself structure and other functional properties,\u201d said Empa materials scientist Ashutosh Sinha, as quoted by <i>ScienceAlert<\/i>. \u201cWhy shouldn&#8217;t we do the same?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">LFDs stand out as natural emulsifiers\u2014materials that help blend ingredients that typically resist mixing, like oil and water.\u00a0That makes them useful for industries like food, cosmetics, and skincare, where emulsifiers are found in everything from salad dressing to foundation. What\u2019s more, because the LFD remains alive, it continues releasing useful molecules over time.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is probably the only type of emulsion that becomes more stable over time,\u201d Sinha said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once dried, LFD can be turned into ultra-thin, durable sheets\u2014similar to plastic, but biodegradable and compostable. Researchers say it could replace plastics in common household items like reusable grocery bags. And yes, it\u2019s edible, too\u2014making it safe for food packaging and other consumer-facing applications.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBiodegradable materials always react to their environment,\u201d Empa scientist Gustav Nystr\u00f6m explained. \u201cWe want to find applications where this interaction is not a hindrance but maybe even an advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Looking ahead, the Empa team envisions engineering LFDs with even more functionality, like materials that self-heal, change shape, or adapt to their surroundings. The goal is to create \u201con-demand\u201d materials that could revolutionize manufacturing, packaging, and even fashion.
